On the Occasion of World Food Safety Day 2025
Theme: Science in Action
Fellow Professionals, Partners, and Citizens,
Today, as we join the global community in commemorating World Food Safety Day, we are reminded that safe food is not a privilege; it is a right and a foundation for public health, economic development, and sustainable livelihoods.
This year’s theme, “Science in Action,” could not be more timely.
Around the world, science is transforming how we grow, process, store, and consume food.
In Nigeria and across Africa, we must harness this power to address our unique food safety challenges from farm to fork.
Science in Action means applying evidence-based practices to:
Improve food hygiene at all stages of the value chain.
Strengthen regulatory frameworks
Empower farmers, vendors, and consumers through education. Detect and respond rapidly to foodborne hazards.
Promote innovation in food preservation and monitoring.
As environmental health and public health professionals, we have a critical role to play:
By advocating for stronger policies, supporting risk-based inspections, fostering collaboration across sectors, and ensuring that the science behind food safety reaches even the most vulnerable communities.
I call on all members of EPHPAN, government agencies, industry players, academic institutions, and civil society to work together in translating science into real-world solutions that safeguard the food we consume daily.
Let us seize this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment
Safe Food Today for a Healthy Nigeria Tomorrow.
Happy World Food Safety Day!
Sanitarian Dr. Samuel Akingbehin
National President
